INTASC Standard 6 - Communication Skills
"The teacher uses knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom."
Effective teachers must also be effective communicators; in order to convey goals for the day’s lesson, they must be able to competently share information and ideas with their students in a variety of styles, including verbal and nonverbal forms. In order for educations goals to be met, students must be clearly informed and focused on the objectives of the lesson. If an instructor is less than competent in their communication, confusion and disorder will damage their progress. Modern communication takes many forms, including web-based, which makes transferring information to students and parents easier for all parties involved. Expecially in web based communication, writing skills are imperative in clearly conveying information. As I progress through college and my future career I hope to develop my communication skills to a new level using verbal and non-verbal techniques. A requirement that I must fulfill is a communications course that is offered here at the university will help broaden and expand my skill in public speaking and teaching.
As educators we must have current knowledge in how our students communicate through verbal, non-verbal, and sometimes even to an extent, physical communication. I understand that student differ in many ways when it comes to effectively gathering information. I hope to cater, with the necessary resources, to all students using communication techniques that I have acquired while in school. I must adjust my teaching styles to cater to young adolescents in order to successfully ensure effective communication skills in my classroom.
Not all students are the same when it comes to communication. In my classroom I must provide many examples of communication to ensure that all students have had the opportunity to receive the information. Through the use of speaking directly to the students, passing out information on handouts about classroom material, visual and listening aids, technology and others I can help students fully understand the extent of my information that I am trying to portray to them. As a teacher I must understand that there is more than one way to communicate to students and I must adjust my teaching style so that I allow for the best possible results in my ensembles.

The techniques in the below video show detail in how I am able to connect with students and give them instructions on how to become better musicians. In experiences like these I can reflect upon my teaching skills and discover new ways in which I can become a better educator.

Student Teaching ExperienceThe example is how I am able to connect with my students in a performance manner. By using musical cues, expressions, and other techniques I can convey students to perform more musically as they play their instruments. Recordings like this can also help me begin to assess the strategies I am using and improve on them as I gain experience.
