INTASC Standard 4 - Multiple Instructional Strategies
"The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage students' development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills."
The students should be given a variety of musical styles, learning situations and techniques. Throughout their learning process students should be exposed to many different kinds of music expanding over time periods and nationalities. The students should also be able to answer questions using critical thinking and problem solving. Along with this the teacher should know the appropriate questions to be asked in the classroom setting. The teacher should be able to adapt teaching strategies to various learning situations. So far we have played different pieces from different books. We have some basic knowledge of different ways to teach in different situations. We have practiced different strategies during microteachings. Through MusEd 100 we have been able to practice the various elements needed while using multiple instructional strategies.
We can use an expanding repertoire of music on our own instrument and in daily life. You can take a variety of courses throughout your college career dealing with the instruction needed for an instrument other than your own. Take MusEd classes that help further your knowledge of instructional strategies and material. We should take time to practice teaching various elements in education before entering the field.
Students are not one dimensional learners. As teachers we must provide multiple learning opportunities to ensure that students are receiving the best education that we can give to them. Some opportunities that we can give our students are listening, singing and movement. Through the use of listening lessons, teacher can guide the skills that need to be practiced, increase the students overall knowledge of different musical styles and techniques and provide critical and aesthetic listening experiences. Singing allows for overall tonal development, development of linear concepts in dealing with pitch (e.g. Same and Different, Direction and Contour) and being able to describe musical elements such as melody and harmony. Using movement allows students to experience music kinesthetically, allows students to use their own interpretation of music in their movements, and help students develop socially and physically.
As music educators we have a variety of strategies to provide our students within the classroom. Through the use of listening, playing, singing and many more strategies we can provide students with several learning opportunities that they can use to advance their musical skills in the classroom. Listening helps students train specific skills in an instrumental classroom such as knowledge of intonation and the use of different textures when playing. Using listening as an example, students can better understand how to interpret music and can allow for them to use these skills in the classroom. As the teacher I must help encourage the development of the skills and provide learning opportunities that will help allow students to enable these skills in the classroom.
Instrumental Techniques Lesson Plan
In this lesson plan I have managed to adapt teaching strategies to best fit my students grade and musicianship level. The techniques used in this plan are an excellent representation of how I as a teacher need to adjust teaching styles to fit my students learning habits. Experiences like this are the foundation of any good education.
