INTASC Standard 9 - Professional Commitment and Responsibility
"The teacher is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of his or her choices and actions on others (students, parents, and other professionals in the learning community), and who actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally.
A good teacher is a teacher who wants the students to learn as much as he or she is capable of. In order to do this, the teacher must be willing to grow as a teacher. In order to do this, the teacher must use resources and join organizations. This will help them keep up to date on their teaching techniques and also know what is going on in other classrooms. National standards should be a key to the teachers lesson plan as well. So far, I have learned about the national standards of teaching. I did a report on which I had to completely right out everything that is on the national standards. I also have joined the MENC. This is a music program that has meetings to help music educators learn more on how to teach better in the classroom. I will continue to go to MENC meetings to help me become a great teacher. I will also join more music organizations in order to get the full details of teaching. Knowing the national standards is important, so I will continue to engage on my knowledge of this. Using the standards in my micro-teaching will help me to be able to understand them better.
It is very important that while teaching you stay involved with education. You must love teaching in order to give your students the best education possible. Trying new ideas and gathering your students responses can help you mold your teaching method that is best for your students. You can get ideas and techniques not only from fellow colleagues but by becoming a member of professional organizations such MENC you can become more involved in your profession.
Staying active in any given field of education is crucial to ensure your students the best education. The longer we teach the more experience we gather through personal experience, experience from other teachers, how students react to certain teaching methods and many more. We must use different techniques or styles of teaching to best ensure our students an education that will fit them best. Through the use of such professional organizations such as MENC and IMEA, teachers can get good teaching methods from professional educators that can help give ideas to be a good teacher.
A good teacher must be able to reflect on his or her own teachings. Being able to identify the good aspects of your teaching can help you incorporate those ideas into future lessons. With good teaching examples come more difficult examples. Not every method in a lesson may work. You must identify these experiences and learn to adjust them to best fit your classroom. Keeping a personal log or journal, and keeping good record of how each of your lessons has went can allow you to look back and identify what lessons have been successful for you and what have not been. Also video recording and other media can help you reflect on your personal experiences as a teacher.
While actively teaching in the field I must continually evaluate my own performance in my classroom. The decisions I make ultimately effect how students, parents and in some cases the community, view music education. By staying current with teach practices, engaging in organizations such as MENC, NBA and others and discussing with other colleagues I can see how I must evaluate my performance in my ensemble and how I can better my teaching practices to fit the needs of the students. This allows me as the teacher to mature in my skills and provide the best educational situation possible.
Experiences in front of any classroom can be useful for me to evaluate and assess my teaching methods inside the class. I must know how much instructional strategies are encouraging intrinsic motivation within my students. Using methods such as personal evaluation, recording, video taping and others I can constantly keep myself updated on the best instructional strategies that will benefit my students.
Teaching Reflection for Elementary General Music
This is a reflection from my field work in elementary general music. After executing our lesson plan we were asked to evaluate and expand on our experiences so to provide for additional ideas on our teaching methods in the future. A good teacher should be able to evaluate their own performance in the classroom as well as reflect on his or her experiences. This is allows for future development of the teacher and will in the end provide better experiences for the student. The experiences that we gathered in the field we were able to evaluate our own individual performance, with the help of our music specialist. The ideas and thoughts that we have gather through this assignment have gave us numerous items to reflect upon in future teachings.

Video Reflection for Field Teaching
This is a video reflection from a field teaching I have recently done. In my later years at Ball State University I am able to reflect much more deeply on how to make my teaching best fit my students needs. The techniques I am able to take away from reflections like this help me become a better teacher in the long run.

Audio Recording - Seagate Overture
This recording comes from my cooperating teacher during my student teaching experience. Here he gives me hints on how to teach different aspects of an ensemble rehearsal that can benefit student achievement. Focusing on both instrumental and instructional techniques I can continue to evaluate my presence in front of any ensemble or classroom.
