INTASC Standard 8 - Assessment of Student Learning
"The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of the learner."
It is important that you as an educator understand that your students retain information in various ways. To check to make sure they are comprehending the material teachers must asses their students to guarantee that they are getting the most out of your lesson plan. Through activities and testing, a teacher will be able to understand the various ways students learn information, how they store it, and how you must change your teaching style to fit their learning needs. Like everybody else, I have been learning since a very young age. From my parents to friends, family, and teachers, I have been exposed to various ways of assessment. I feel, though, that this is only the beginning of what I should know when I am assessing my students and others in the future. I hope to increase my knowledge of assessment through various methods and Examples Instructors at Ball State University. Through both music and general educations classes I will continue to comprehend and understand what I need to do in order to assess my students.
Assessment in music can sometimes be seen as difficult. There are several strategies teachers can use to assess whether or not their students are grasping the given material. Questioning is a major component of assessment. Questions must be developed tin order give students equal opportunity for success. Making sure questions are not open ended, giving students time to think and asking questions that allow for multiple answers gives students a positive experience in the classroom.
There are three areas that teachers must assess in the musical classroom. Knowledge of the content is dedicated mostly to cognitive domain topics such as knowing what musical elements stand for and how they are used in music. Musical skills in the classroom such as singing, moving, recording improvising and listening involve mostly how well students are able to demonstrate what they have learned in the classroom. The overall attitude a student has for music must be observed as well. This affects their overall performance in the classroom and how it can reflect upon other students as well.
Teachers must observe students responses through different forms of assessment. Each type of assessment allows for different techniques to be used when assessing whether it be through questions, formal evaluations such as a written or playing test or other types of assessment. Planning for assessment can be useful to both the student and the teacher. If students are informed of this assessment they will most likely prepare for the evaluation. Teachers benefit from planned assessment as well. Progress can be tracked for students throughout the school year so that other teachers, parents and administrators can see progress of your students. Assessment can be good for the teacher as well. Assessing whether certain lessons or ideas have been successful in the classroom is not only good for the teacher but good for the program as well.
Students can be assessed in an ensemble several different ways. Showing knowledge of musical skills through playing tests or identification can allow for the educator to become aware of a students knowledge of the subject matter. Through the use of formal assessment such a playing test that may have been announced earlier and informal assessment such as playing within the ensemble I as an educator can help determine if a students truly understand the subject content and help them improve their knowledge of the curriculum.
Assessment in an instrumental classroom setting is not always the easiest thing to accomplish. Through experiences like my LAMP unit I can begin to practice the skills necessary to begin assessing my students inside the classroom. Using different formal and informal assessment exercises I can start to understand what changes must be made in my teaching strategies to best fit my students.
Lessons Project for Woodwind Techniques
In this lesson I was able to give a fellow peer a lesson on the flute. Here I was able to discover what challenges my student was facing and assess their ability to perform the instrument. By gathering this information I can better adapt my teaching strategies to help students gather the correct information in my classroom.

Unit Curriculum Project Worksheets
The following worksheets come from a large project I was able to put together for my band literature class. Here we find several different techniques for student assessment through knowledge of skills, ability to perform and basic attitudes toward music. These types of activities help teachers form plans in which student assessment can be easily accessible.
