INTASC Standard 7 - Instructional Planning Skills
"The teacher plans instruction based on knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, and curriculum goals."
Lesson plans are a backbone in the teaching process. To make a good lesson plan the teacher should take into account the various backgrounds and previous learning that their students have encountered. You must also take into consideration the resources and goals your school has when making the lesson plan. We have made artificial lesson plans and put them to use in a classroom setting. We also have learned various teaching techniques that we can use in these practice teaching sessions. With that we have also learned the national standards give to us by the MENC. We will continue to make sample lesson plans and micro teachings as we progress in our college career. We will learn different techniques on how to change the lesson plan mid lesson and adjust it under various conditions. I will also take into consideration in the future my school’s goals and community values when making my lesson plan.
Planning can be a teachers’ greatest tool. Planning for the classroom involves long term planning and short term planning. Long term planning allows a teacher to equally spread the content over the semester and see if they are meeting the educational goals for each individual student. Some long term planning techniques could be through thematic based planning, use of the textbook and materials, and your own based experiences that will evenly spread material throughout the school year. Short term planning involves the use of lesson planning. Individual lessons can actively engage students in the learning process if organized correctly. A good example of lesson planning involves addressing individual musical elements, behavioral objectives, how assessment can be addressed in the lesson, a well detailed procedure, what national standards are being addressed in the lesson and ideas that you can use in the lesson and lessons in the future.
Through the use of successful planning, teachers can help spread necessary content through the school year. By using planning teachers can also give students multiple opportunities to learn by using several strategies of teaching. By using planning in the classroom a teacher can give a student the best musical experience necessary.
In an ensemble setting, as an educator I must understand the importance of planning to allow for the best possible personal growth as well as ensemble growth to take place. Using such teaching methods as scope and sequence I can allow for the best educational progress to be seen in my classroom. Knowledge of community factors, overall curriculum and subject matter and how students adjust to planning are a few key factors that I must look for when planning my ensembles goals for the school year.
Unit Curriculum Project
This artifact is an example of an eight week curriculum set up for a typical high school wind ensemble. Inside is shows a variety of planning strategies that can be used in any classroom, not just a wind ensemble setting. It is important for teachers to be able to plan necessary events such as tests, assignment and concerts in a professional matter.

Lesson Plan for Elementary General Music Field Teaching
This lesson plan reflects a partner and myself teaching episode from the field. Preparing for this lesson we used the techniques that we have explored in class to create a successful lesson plan for our students. This lesson plan provides and excellent example of short term planning in the field. My partner and I were able to establish a short listening lesson in which we were able to engage students in the musical skill of listening. Using planning such as this eases the experience for beginning teachers in the field and allows for a positive experience.
