INTASC Standard 1 - Knowledge of Subject Matter
"The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structure of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students."
It is important for a music leader to have knowledge of his or her area. He should be able to play on his instrument at top skill, as well as be able to communicate with the students. He should also be able to make a creative atmosphere for the students to better engage them in learning. There should be a number of resources available for the teacher and the students, such as computers and textbooks. So far, I have been able to get in front of the class and teach an objective. This has helped me to engage into student life to see how students will respond to certain activities. I have also been progressively learning on my instrument, to better my skills in the music area. Because we have been doing many different projects for different music classes, I have been exposed to many resources. The library contains many good resources for a developing music major.
Children come upon many elements that make up what we call music. They are exposed to beat, rhythm, melody, form, timbre, various musical styles and cultures and many more concepts even before attending school. Once students have entered the music classroom they can be encouraged to practice these musical elements by performing skills such as playing, singing, creating, movement and listening. In the music classroom we can reinforce these lessons that they have experience by a wide variety of hands on activities that can engage the student in music. Through the use of the National Standards, these skills can help improve and reinforce musical elements that these students will exposed to in the musical classroom. The National Standards in music are a professional document that allows for students to successfully engage in music and the music classroom while exploring different areas of music such as culture, improvising and relationships to other school subjects. There are also many resources available to teachers. Through use of textbook series such as Silver Burdett’s “Making Music” a teacher can enrich the classroom learning experience by providing several learning opportunities for students to learn.
Within instrumental music, as educators we must understand all concepts in which we will be teaching in the music room. Knowledge of all instruments, both technical aspects and musical aspects of selected repertoire, and understanding how students respond to classroom management and discipline styles will help give students a rich knowledge of music and will allow for them to interpret in their own way. The teacher should be able to create learning situations that fit both cognitive and psychomotor skills for students and allow for performance based activities while still introducing subject matter to the students.
Textbook Review Paper
Here is an example assignment I completed for my elementary methods class. This artifact represents what exactly an educator should be looking for when selecting a textbook to be used in the classroom. The amount of knowledge and skills that can be gained from a textbook can ultimately help or hinder the amount of progress your students gain while in your classroom.

Sample Lesson Plan
The file below is a lesson plan for my instrumental techniques course. In this class I learned the proper techniques to use in my daily classroom that will help students take the most away from their education. This lesson plan represents how much I strive to give students equal opportunities in the classroom and how I want them to gain the most knowledge while learning.
